STREAMSTEP

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

StreamStep: Streamlining the optimisation of Sustainable Thermal Energy systems and Prototype technologies in process industries.

GENERAL DATA:

Program: HORIZON-CL4-2024-TWIN-TRANSITION-01
Reference: 101178351
RESOLUTION Date: 27/09/2024
Execution date: 01/10/2024-30/09/2028

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

Streamstep is focused on improving thermal energy management in industrial processes. The project will address processes generating waste heat from 135 °C to over 1400 °C and five novel prototype heat exchangers will be implemented to achieve flexible operation over multiple heat sinks. Heat upgrading will be managed by high-temperature heat pumps, achieving outlet temperatures of 150 °C and 215 °C, with enhanced performance through ejector technology and the ability to operate dynamically over a range of required temperatures. The enablers of these innovations are advanced manufacturing techniques, which achieve superior material performance through new material alloys. The system will be demonstrated in five sectors: nonferrous metals, ceramics, minerals, plastics, and refining. A holistic digital twin process will also be integral to these advances, as it will provide the infrastructure to implement optimization, energy balancing, etc. The effects of the StreamSTEP project will be significant, as efficient recovery and reuse of most of the waste heat will be achieved through systems with a payback of less than 3 years, with the added effects of increased productivity in the selected processes, as well as energy flexibility.
