PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

The European PRIM-ROCK project seeks to reduce the carbon footprint and increase the energy efficiency of the metallurgical and cement industry by developing advanced technologies for ore calcination and roasting processes, as well as for the pre-processing of raw materials.

Among the main project innovations is the replacement of conventional furnaces, generally powered by fossil fuels, by microwave or electric indirect heating furnaces, in which the reduction of metal oxides and sulfides will be carried out using hydrogen instead of coal. In addition, for each use case a physics-based reduced order model will be calculated to allow scenario analysis and optimization of the operation in real time.

The technologies developed will be demonstrated in industrial-scale applications in three ASPIRE sectors: minerals, cement and non-ferrous metals. The objective of the project is to improve the efficiency of material resources by 30%, as well as to achieve savings of 770 ktCO2 per year in three pilot lines operating at commercial level, which represents a reduction of the carbon footprint of between 60-75% with respect to the original process, depending on the case.
