Consumer demands for increasingly customized and personalized products, together with the EU’s new Circular Economy Action Plans, are driving the wood industry’s transition to smarter and more sustainable manufacturing models.
In this transformation process, FINSA has identified opportunities for improvement in its board manufacturing process, based on the digitalization of the process and the reuse of a higher percentage of waste from the industry. Thus, FINSA proposes, on the one hand, the incorporation of a new type of raw material to its production processes, based on the use of industrial, agricultural and/or forestry waste for the manufacture of wood panels. And on the other hand, the digitalization of the board forming process in order to anticipate and adjust production to the changing needs of the market and the different raw material origins, as mentioned above.
Through the execution of this project and the collaboration established with FINSA, ITAINNOVA will develop digital tools for monitoring the waste at the entrance of the plant, as well as simulation models that allow to anticipate and obtain in real time the functional properties of its wood particle board, linking these properties to the production process itself and increasing its sustainability by reducing the consumption of raw materials. Finally, it is intended to extend the digital twin concept to the entire board processing line, using existing physical sensors and IIoT infrastructure and other monitoring systems to obtain parameters that are complex and expensive to obtain using traditional techniques. The exploitation of this data set will allow FINSA to develop and deploy digital services to improve and optimize its production.
