DIGI-REC 4.0 – Optimization of the environmental impact of the plastic injection processes, through the Digitalization in the use of Recycled materials, guaranteeing the quality of the parts manufactured with the highest % of recycled material.

RESOLUTION Date: 03/11/2020
Execution date: 07/01/2020 – 03/31/2020-31/03/2021
The main objective of this project is to maximize the recyclability of plastic materials used in injection molding processes, which implies maximizing the reduction of their environmental impact, favoring the circularity of plastic and facilitating clean energy production.
Plastic parts manufacturers typically use recycled material from their own scrap parts, but they do not know in what proportion they can mix it with virgin material without compromising (i) the mechanical characteristics of the product, and (ii) the mechanical characteristics of the product and (ii) the processability of their manufacture. An excess of recycled material can lead to a worsening of the mechanical characteristics of the product to be manufactured and can also generate processability problems in the injection molding machines, resulting in dimensional or aesthetic defects. For fear of this, less recycled material is normally used than would otherwise be possible.
For this reason, the challenge addressed by this project is the use of digital techniques to determine the maximum admissible amount of recycled material that the product and the process are capable of admitting from the moment a product is designed.
Thanks to the use of these digital tools, it will be possible to obtain as much recycled material as possible, (i) does not compromise the mechanical characteristics of the product and (ii) is processable under the same or better conditions than the material without reuse.
