SMART MOSS

MOSS BOX is a smart box that filters ambient air through a panel of living moss, with ITA technology.

A system capable of capturing CO2 from the environment by means of moss placed in a device and transforming it into oxygen, which will be returned to the environment.

SMART MOSS Europe, together with ITA, has developed a functional prototype of a natural air purifier (MOSS BOX) to verify the viability and efficiency of the electronic air purification system using moss.
This prototype consists of a box where the moss is introduced and the challenge of the prototype is to keep the moss alive to perform its main task, purifying the air. For this purpose, a system has been developed that integrates sensors that collect information about the environment and the state of the moss, and activators that keep the moss alive.

Problem

SMART MOSS Europe is a young innovative company that wants to develop a prototype product that uses moss as an organic element for air purification, which is currently in the idea phase. The prototype to be developed should be a system capable of capturing CO2 from the environment by means of the moss placed in the device and transforming it into oxygen that will be returned to the environment. The idea of this prototype is aligned with major challenges such as circular economy, health improvement, pollution in cities, coexistence with plants and animals.

Smart Moss Europe is dedicated to the cultivation and encapsulation of a specific moss in a technological reservoir called Moss box that will provide welfare to the plant, analyzing and enhancing its condition and efficiency.

The biggest challenge on our part has been the development of the program that manages the entire device. Although at the beginning of the project we defined a series of functions, conditions and operating rules, during the development we have been finding new needs such as, for example, the development of an app to control and monitor the system using bluetooth communication or sending data to the cloud.

Results

This prototype consists of a box where the moss is introduced and the challenge of the prototype is to keep the moss alive to perform its main task, to purify the air. For this purpose, a system has been developed that integrates sensors that collect information about the environment and the state of the moss, and actuators that keep the moss alive.
At ITA we are working on developing an AI system that allows the actuators to adapt to each environment achieving maximum efficiency of the moss. This information will create a real-time database on the air quality in our spaces, the state of your plant and our environmental impact. And with the use of the “old” moss, we will extract its biostimulant to convert it into an organic fertilizer that we will sell to the agricultural market.
