AGRIDATAVALUE

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

Smart Farm and Agri-environmental Big Data Value

PROJECT DATA:

Program: HORIZON EUROPE HORIZON-CL6-2022 GOVERNANCE 01
Reference: 101086461
Date of RESOLUTION: 08/11/2022
Date of execution: 01/02/2023-31/01/2029

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

By 2050, the Earth will be home to more than 10 billion people. Agricultural production needs to increase by up to 65% to feed all inhabitants. Today, almost all productive land is under cultivation, more than 70% of drinking water is used to irrigate crops (more than 60% is wasted through over-irrigation) and, in Europe alone, we use more than 220,000 tons of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, increasing the contamination of aquifers and endangering our fragile ecosystem and causing climate change.
Beyond water wastage, excessive irrigation increases potential crop yield losses due to the effects of fungi and bacteria on plants, alters the oxygen balance of the root zone, reduces water uptake by plants and causes a decrease in soil temperature, which reduces root growth, increases energy use for pumping, causes leaching of nitrogen and other micronutrients and root-rotting diseases.
Similarly, livestock play an important role in balancing the climate ecosystem. In Europe (EU27), the agricultural sector is responsible for 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions, while an excessive concentration of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from enteric fermentation of livestock, raises the average annual temperature, contributing to global warming.

AgriDataValue aims to establish itself as a “Game Changer” in the digital transformation of smart farming and agri-environmental monitoring, and strengthen smart farming capabilities, competitiveness and fair revenues by introducing an innovative, open source, smart, multi-technology, fully distributed agri-environmental data space (ADS). To achieve technological maturity, rapid and mass acceptance, AgriDataValue adopts and adapts a multidimensional approach that combines big data technologies and next generation data spaces (BDVA/ IDSA/ GAIA-X) with agricultural knowledge, monetization, new business models and agri-environmental policies, leverages existing platforms, edge computing and networks/services, and introduces novel concepts, methods, tools, pilot installations and engagement campaigns to go beyond the current state of the art, conduct groundbreaking research and create sustainable innovation in scaling up (real-time) agricultural sensor data, already evident during the lifetime of the project.
