Compliance with current and forthcoming legislation regarding air quality significantly limits the ammonia emissions allowed for pig farms (16% reduction by 2030), which implies the need to implement emission reduction technologies. In this regard, catalogs of best available techniques facilitate the decision-making process; however, the economic impact of deploying emission control technologies requires detailed quantitative analysis. This project will develop a set of digital tools to support decision making in each of the actions necessary to carry out the deployment of emission control technologies, specifically ammonia, in pig farms.
The overall objective of the project is to adopt and exploit digitalization technologies for risk minimization in decision making on the adoption, implementation and operation of technology for the control and minimization of ammonia emissions in pig farms.
The activities to be carried out to achieve the general objective of the project are planned in three phases:
– Phase 1: Virtual sensing. Development of augmented sensors combining information from physical sensor networks with virtual sensors developed from detailed 3D fluid dynamic simulations considering the farm geometry. This will allow detailed assessment of ammonia emissions within the vessels. This Phase has been developed from November 2021 to August 2022.
– Phase 2: Prototyping in simulated environment. Prototyping and performance evaluation in simulated environment of the best available techniques, their combination and geographical adaptation for the minimization of ammonia emissions. This phase runs from July 2022 to April 2023.
– Phase 3: Digital twin for operations management. Digitization of operations for optimal control of ammonia emissions at the farm during farm operation.
For Phase 2 of the project, the specific objectives are:
Objective 1. Compile the best available techniques for BAT prototyping and evaluation in a simulated environment based on the enhanced NH3 monitoring system developed in Phase 1.
Objective 2. Conceptualize, define and design operational BAT based on the information provided by the results of Phase 1 (ie. enhanced NH3 monitoring system).
Objective 3. Evaluate and define best practices on operational BAT designed in a simulated environment.
Objective 4. Conceptualize, define and design a gas scrubbing system for NH3 cleanup as an example of prototyping in a simulated technological BAT environment based on the results of Phase 1 (i.e. enhanced NH3 monitoring system).
Objective 5. Generate and communicate to the swine sector knowledge related to the use of digital technologies in the evaluation of ammonia emissions.
