Execution date: 01/05/2022-30/10/2025

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

Aviation is responsible for 2% of global CO2 emissions and by 2050 these are expected to be three times higher than in 2015. The EU’s goal is to drastically reduce these emissions, however, efficiency gains in the evolution of turbofan-powered wing designs alone will not be sufficient to achieve the climate neutrality targets set for 2050. Therefore, the rethinking of ultra-strong aerostructures that integrate new forms of propulsion (electric, hybrid, hydrogen) is a fundamental aspect, which could result in a reduction of up to 50% of emissions. This rethinking will require extensive redesign and the application of new manufacturing technologies. To take advantage of this opportunity it is necessary to define reliable and commercially viable aircraft concepts, while at the same time ensuring a competitive position by reducing costs, risks and time during the development of these configurations.
Virtual prototyping offers great potential to meet this new challenge, presenting itself as a key technology in the design, certification and manufacturing of these new designs. Within this context, the CAELESTIS project will develop a novel, secure, end-to-end, interoperable simulation ecosystem that will enable the establishment of a multi-directional data flow along the aircraft value chain. This system will link product design with the CAD-CAE tools of engineering teams in order to accelerate new aeronautical designs within the EU, with a view to meeting the 2050 climate targets. This ecosystem will be enhanced by high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures that enable massive computations and predictions. From these, digital twins will be developed that will incorporate unprecedented levels of detail and cover various stages of production, capturing the effects and deviations that occur in manufacturing.
Therefore, the main outcome of CAELESTIS will be the flexible integration of simulation ecosystems in aeronautical design, facilitating multidisciplinary design, optimizing and quantifying uncertainty on realistic time scales for commercial aviation. This would accelerate the reduction of the impacts and emissions generated by aeronautics on the environment.
