Global Predictive Maintenance

Project name

Global Predictive Maintenance: Application of I4.0 Technologies. for the development of solutions for predictive maintenance at a global level for construction machinery and public works.

Execution period

01/07/2017 – 31/03/2018

File number: AEI-010300-2017-218

The project

Future competitiveness in the construction, public works and mining machinery sector in the future will pass, and this was reflected in the CECE Congress, Association European Association of Construction Machinery Manufacturers to which it is a member. belongs to ANMOPYC, held last October 2014, for performing efforts aimed at positioning the sector in the new scenario through (1) the development of new machines (or improvements of the current ones) that respond to the new challenges of the construction, public works and mining (2) the adaptation of the manufacturing and export processes to the new global reality.

This project is focused on the second of the points, especially on the after-sales processes of machines globally. As indicated in the latest study conducted by MCKinsey&Company published in April 2016, “Reengineering construction equipment: from operations focused to customer centric”, one of the most important trends of future in the global sector of public works and construction machine manufacturers is the generation of aftermarket services for end users and distributors. In this area, one of the problems with the greatest impact on the operations of end users is the maintenance of the machinery on the worksites to ensure the correct functioning of the machines during operation.

The public works, construction and mining machinery market is a global market and companies, regardless of size, need to develop more innovative and higher quality products and services and bring them to market ahead of their competitors to be successful in today’s challenging economic conditions.

This project addresses the analysis and selection of the most appropriate technologies to generate innovative predictive maintenance services at global level by Spanish manufacturers of construction machinery and public works.

  • Innovative Business Clusters

This project has received a grant under the program to support Innovative Business Groups (AEIs). This program to support the strengthening of innovation clusters is inserted in the European strategy to improve competitiveness for the innovation.

The clusters that can benefit from the program’s grants are those entities whose innovative potential and critical mass have been recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO) through their registration in the Register of Innovative Business Clusters.

Project objectives

Technical information on the project and its objectives:

The objective of this project is the definition of a portfolio of projects of experimental development and innovation related to the creation of a technological platform oriented to generate innovative services of predictive maintenance of construction and public works machinery at global level.

Secondary objectives will include:

  • Capture of needs and problems to be solved in the field of maintenance of construction and public works machinery from the point of view of the manufacturer, the distributor and the end user of the machines.
  • Design conceptual of a predictive maintenance technology platform that can respond to the needs of manufacturers, distributors and end users of construction and public works machines .
  • Classification and assessment of the technologies of monitoring of machinery (Monitoring), of communications (Telematics) and of big data for data analysis and failure prediction on machines at construction sites (Data Analytics).
  • Development of business models for manufacturers of construction and public works machinery for the provision and sale of services predictive maintenance through this technology platform.
  • Generation of projects for the development and implementation of solutions for predictive maintenance that can be provided through after-sales services by manufacturers.
The project includes the following five work packages:
  • Surveillance of Monitoring, Telematics and Data Analytics technologies for the predictive maintenance of public works and construction machinery .
  • Selection of the group/s of machines with to work with. Definition and prioritization of problems and maintenance needs of these machines.
  • Conceptual design of a global predictive maintenance platform. Proof of concept.
  • Development of new business models based on predictive maintenance services.
  • Generation of a project portfolio for the development of this platform for predictive maintenance and dissemination actions. Dissemination of results.
