Presentation and objectives

This project is a continuation of previous FPA projects led by IFCA and is presented as a coordinated project of three institutions: IFCA (UC-CSIC), IMB-CNM (CSIC) and ITAINNOVA. The main purpose of the project is to ensure an optimal participation in the scientific exploitation of the CERN LHC collider data during the years 2018-2020 and to make an important contribution in the high luminosity upgrade of the inner tracker inner tracker of the CMS experiment through the design of 3D sensors, the validation of this technology and the design of the detector power system based on EMC. The executive summary of the proposed activity is as follows:

  • Exploit the substantial increase in brightness to improve the results of the analysis.
  • Evolution of computational services that directly support the activities of physics analysis to cope with more powerful analysis of a larger volume of data.
  • Operation and maintenance of the muon detector, tracker and alignment of the muon chambers .
  • Train the IFCA as an assembly center for inner tracker modules.
  • Qualification of small pitch “3D” pixel sensors ultra-resistant to radiation for the inner layers of the future vertex detector.
  • Development of a small mass, high reliability series power distribution system ; electromagnetic compatibility studies and simulation of topologies (shielding and heat dissipation in power cables, grounding , noise analysis).
  • Control quality control and low mass DAQ for readout (ROC) ASICs demonstrators and prototypes, contribution to CMS ROC prototype design.
  • R&D on radiation tolerance and geometric efficiency of LGAD sensors for timing applications.
